1. Dr. Rajendra Prasad (1950-1962)

2. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1962-1967)

3. Dr. Zakir Husain (1967-1969)

1. V. Giri is the only President elected as an Independent supported by the Congress Party. A labor leader by background, he had earlier served as Vice President. His presidency saw political turbulence, including the split in Congress.

5. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (1974-1977)

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed signed the Emergency Proclamation in 1975, a controversial period in Indian democracy. He was the second Muslim President of India. He passed away while still in office in 1977.

6. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy (1977-1982)

Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was the only President elected unopposed. He had earlier served as Lok Sabha Speaker and was associated with the Janata Party during his presidency. His term was known for restoring political stability after the Emergency.

7. Giani Zail Singh (1982-1987)

Zail Singh became India’s first Sikh President and was known for his bold personality. His tenure witnessed the Operation Blue Star and the assassination of Indira Gandhi.

8. R. Venkataraman (1987-1992)

9. Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma (1992-1997)

10. K. R. Narayanan (1997-2002)

Acting Presidents of India

India has had a few Acting Presidents when the sitting President passed away or resigned. These temporary heads ensured continuity and constitutional order. Notable acting Presidents include Mohammad Hidayatullah and B. D. Jatti.

Eligibility Criteria to Become the President of India

To contest for the post of President in India, a candidate must fulfill the following constitutional conditions:

• Must be a citizen of India.
• Must have completed 35 years of age.
• Must be qualified to be elected as a member of the Lok Sabha.
• Must not hold any office of profit under the Government of India, any state government, or any local/public authority.
• The nomination must be endorsed by at least 50 proposers and 50 seconders who are members of the Electoral College.
