Districts of Jammu and Kashmir

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was created from the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, which became a single political and geographical entity after Maharaja Gulab Singh and the British Government signed the Treaty of Amritsar on March 16, 1846. It comprised three regions: Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. In 2019, Ladakh was made a separate union territory.

Administratively, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is divided into two divisions, Jammu and Kashmir, each of which has ten districts, for a total of twenty districts. A Tehsildar is in charge of each of the 207 Tehsils that make up these districts. Tehsils are further divided into smaller divisions called Niabats.

Largest District in Jammu and Kashmir

Kishtwar is the Largest District in Jammu and Kashmir by area, with a total area of 7,737 square kilometers. Kishtwar is known for its unexplored beauty, amazing landmarks, health resorts, tourist destinations, popular historical and religious attractions, and celebrated shrines and monuments. Ganderbal, which was formed in 2007, is the Smallest District in Jammu and Kashmir. It has an area of 259 km². The district is further divided into six tehsils, namely Kangan, Ganderbal, Tullamulla, Wakura, Lar, and Gund. The majority of the population (80%) of the district is engaged in farming and related activities.
