Haryana came into existence on November 1, 1966, when Punjab was reorganized based on language. While Haryanvi is commonly spoken across the state, Chandigarh serves as the shared capital for both Haryana and Punjab. With 15 Legislative Assemblies and 11 different Chief Ministers of Haryana over the years, each leader has played a part in shaping the political landscape.

Current Chief Minister of Haryana

Nayab Singh Saini has been serving as the Current Chief Minister of Haryana since March 12, 2024, following the resignation of Manohar Lal Khattar ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2025. Prior to taking office, Saini held the position of President of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Haryana unit in 2023. His tenure has been marked by key initiatives, including raising the expenditure limits for Gram Panchayats, reducing electricity tariffs, and launching affordable housing schemes aimed at improving rural and urban living standards.

First Chief Minister of Haryana

Bhagwat Dayal Sharma, popularly known as Panditji, holds the distinction of being the First Chief Minister of Haryana following the state’s formation in 1966. He was born in Beri, located in the present-day Jhajjar district of Haryana. A committed nationalist, he played an active role in the Indian freedom movement between 1941 and 1947, contributing to the country’s struggle for independence.

Beyond his role in state politics, he also served with distinction at the national level, holding the office of Governor of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha from April 30, 1980, to May 14, 1984. Revered as one of Haryana’s most respected political figures, his legacy continues to be remembered for its integrity, visionary leadership, and commitment to public service.

Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Haryana

Bhajan Lal Bishnoi holds the distinction of being the Longest Serving Chief Minister of Haryana, with a remarkable term of 11 years and 10 months. Bhajan Lal served several ministries in Devi Lal’s Janata Party government, including the Ministries of Labor and Employment, Dairy Development and Animal Husbandry, and Forests. Following this, in 1979 he along with several MLAs switched to the Congress, overthrowing the Janata Party administration.
