As of 2025, Hemant Soren serves as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He assumed office for his fourth term on November 28, 2024, following the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Elections 2024. Representing the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), his leadership continues to shape the state’s governance and development trajectory.

Babulal Marandi was the First Chief Minister of Jharkhand, serving from 2000 to 2003 as a representative of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shibu Soren, from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), holds the record for the shortest tenure, having served for just 10 days. The longest-serving Chief Minister of the state was Raghubar Das, also from the BJP, who held office for a continuous five-year term. As of 2025, Hemant Soren is the current Chief Minister, marking his fourth term in office under the banner of the JMM.

First Chief Minister of Jharkhand

Babulal Marandi became the First Chief Minister of Jharkhand on November 15, 2000, the day the state was officially carved out of Bihar. A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Marandi was selected for his clean reputation and strong tribal roots, aligning with the aspirations of the new state’s people. During his tenure, he focused on establishing the foundational administrative structures necessary for Jharkhand’s governance and development in its formative years.

Current Chief Minister of Jharkhand

Hemant Soren is serving as the Current Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He has held the position for three terms. His first term spanned from July 13, 2013, to December 28, 2014. He was re-elected for a second term from December 29, 2019, to January 31, 2024, during which he prioritized tribal welfare, educational reforms, employment generation, and sustainable development. After a brief interim period when Champai Soren held office, Hemant Soren was sworn in for his third term on July 4, 2024, continuing his focus on inclusive governance and social equity.

Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Jharkhand

Raghubar Das is the Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Jharkhand, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He made history by becoming the first and only CM of the state to complete a full five-year term (2014–2019) without resigning or being removed from office. His tenure brought political stability to a state often marked by short-lived governments and frequent imposition of President’s Rule. However, despite his complete term, he was defeated in the 2019 state elections by Hemant Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
