Chief Ministers of Manipur

The Chief Minister of Manipur is the head of the government in the state. The Chief Minister is appointed by the Governor, usually the leader of the majority party or coalition in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. Manipur has had several Chief Ministers since it became a full-fledged state in 1972. The role of the CM has been crucial in maintaining peace and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the state,  considering its diverse ethnic population and socio-political landscape. The  Current Chief Minister of Manipur is N. Biren Singh, who has served multiple terms and is known for his initiatives in improving governance, digital infrastructure, and public welfare in the state.

After its formation in 1972, the state has been under the leadership of various political parties, such as the Indian National Congress and  Bharatiya Janata Party. Mairembam Koireng Singh was the First Chief Minister of Manipur who played an important role in Manipur’s transition to statehood. Okram Ibobi Singh is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Manipur, and currently the state is headed by N. Biren Singh, a prominent member of the BJP, serving as the Current Chief Minister of Manipur.

Current Chief Minister of Manipur

Nongthombam Biren Singh served as the Chief Minister of Manipur. He joined the Indian National Congress in 2003 and held ministerial positions during his tenure. However, in 2016, he left Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 2017, he became the First Chief Minister of Manipur from the BJP. His leadership, however, came under criticism for the handling of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which eventually led to his resignation. Currently, the state is under President’s Rule.

First Chief Minister of Manipur

Mairembam Koireng Singh was the First Chief Minister of Manipur, he was also a prominent freedom fighter and social activist. He played an important role in the Indian National Army’s activities in Manipur during World War II and the Thangjing Temple movement. Koireng Singh was also a founding member of the Nikhil Manipuri Mahasabha in 1938, which opposed the rule of the Manipuri monarchy. His tenure as First Chief Minister of Manipur laid the foundation for Manipur’s governance and development during its formative years.

Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Manipur

Okram Ibobi Singh is the Longest Serving Chief Minister of Manipur. He served in the position for 15 years, from March 2002 to March 2017, representing the Indian National Congress (INC). During his tenure, he led the state through three consecutive terms and played a significant role in infrastructure development, education reforms, and efforts to maintain law and order in a region often affected by ethnic and insurgent tensions. Ibobi Singh’s long political career and leadership made him one of the most influential figures in Manipur’s political history.

Women Chief Minister of Manipur 

While women have held significant political positions in the state, such as Hangmila Shaiza, who became the first woman elected member to the Manipur Legislative Assembly in 1990 but no woman has served as the Chief Minister of Manipur.
