Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh

The State of Madhya Pradesh was formed on 1 November 1956, following the reorganization of states under the States Reorganisation Act. Prior to this, it was part of the Central Provinces and Berar, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal regions. The Current Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh is Mohan Yadav, who has been in office since 13 December 2023, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Madhya Pradesh has experienced President’s Rule three times due to political instability. The major ruling parties in the state are the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh serve as the head of the government and is appointed by the Governor. Following the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections in 2023, Mohan Yadav of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) became the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, taking oath on 13 December 2023. He succeeded Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. The First Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh was Ravishankar Shukla. Since the state’s formation on 1 November 1956, 19 leaders have served in the position, with Uma Bharti being the First and Only Female Chief Minister.

First Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh

Ravishankar Shukla was the First Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, serving from 1952 until his death on 31 December 1956. After Madhya Pradesh was reorganized in the year 1956, he became its inaugural Chief Minister, representing the Indian National Congress. He represented the Saraipali constituency. 

Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh

Shivraj Singh Chouhan is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, with a tenure spanning over 16 years 282 days across multiple terms (2005–2018 and 2020–2023). He was elected from the Budhni constituency representing the Bharatiya Janata Party. He surpassed the previous record held by Digvijaya Singh, who served for 10 years and 1 day from 1993 to 2003.

Female Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh

Uma Bharti is the First and Only Female Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh to date. She held the office from 8 December 2003 to 23 August 2004, a tenure of 259 days, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party. She represented the Malhara constituency.
