The Maharashtra that we know of today was once a part of the Bombay state. On 1st May 1960, Maharashtra was separated from the Bombay Presidency and became an independent state. Through the decades, the state of Maharashtra has seen very progressive leadership that guided its development through shifting times. Since its formation in 1960, there has been one Major Ruling Party in Maharashtra, that is the Indian National Congress. Chief Ministers of Maharashtra

The First Chief Minister of Maharashtra was Yashwantrao Chavan, who represented the Indian National Congress from the year 1960 to 1962. The Shortest-Serving Chief Minister of Maharashtra was Devendra Fadnavis, who represented the Bharatiya Janata Party for a period of only three days. The Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Maharashtra is Vasantrao Naik, who represented the Indian National Congress for a period of 12 consecutive years. As of 2025, Devendra Fadnavis is the Current Chief Minister of Maharashtra, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party.

There has been one Major Ruling Party in Maharashtra that is the Indian National Congress, being in power for 20 terms, ever since the formation of the state. In recent years, however, we have also seen the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena dominating Maharashtra’s politics. First Chief Minister of Maharashtra

Yashwantrao Chavan, also known as “Leader of Common People, was the First Chief Minister of Maharashtra, who represented the Indian National Congress for 2 consecutive years from 1960 to 1962. He was the leader of Congress, a writer, a freedom fighter, and a social activist. He was also the third and the last Chief Minister of the Bombay state before the separate state of Maharashtra was formed out of it in the year 1960.

Current Chief Minister of Maharashtra

Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis has been the Current Chief Minister of Maharashtra since 5 December 2024, with Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar as his deputies. he previously held this position for two terms from 2014 to 2019. He previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, working alongside Ajit Pawar in the Eknath Shinde government. Other than this, from 2019 to 2022, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He was the President of the BJP’s Maharashtra state from 2013 to 2015.

Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Maharashtra

The Longest-Serving Chief Minister of Maharashtra was Vasantrao Naik, who represented the Indian National Congress as the fourth Chief Minister of Maharashtra for 12 consecutive years from the year 1963 to 1975. He led the state from 5 December 1963 to 21 February 1975, guiding Maharashtra through a period of critical socio-economic progress and policy innovation. He was also known as “The Father of the Green Revolution” in Maharashtra.
