Tripura, initially a Princely State, merged with the Indian Union in 1949 through an agreement signed by Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi and V.P. Menon. It became a Part C State in 1950, administered by a Chief Commissioner. The Territorial Council Act 1956 introduced limited self-governance. In 1963, Tripura gained a Legislative Assembly and Council of Ministers under the Union Territories Act.
Finally, with the enactment of the North Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act in 1971, Tripura attained full statehood on 21 January 1972. In the First Assembly elections in March 1972, Sachindra Lal Singh was appointed as the First Chief Minister of Tripura and served in the position from 1st July 1963 to 1st November 1971. The Current Chief Minister of Tripura is Manik Saha from the Bharatiya Janata Party, serving in the position since 2022.

Dr. Manik Saha is serving as the Current Chief Minister of Tripura. A Rajya Sabha Member and the State BJP President, he assumed office on May 15, 2022, at the Raj Bhawan in Agartala, following the resignation of former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
In India’s federal structure, the Chief Minister of Tripura is the executive head of the state, while the Governor functions as the constitutional (de jure) head. Article 164 of the Indian Constitution governs the appointment of the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers by the Governor.
