The State of West Bengal was formed as part of independent India on 15th August 1947, following the partition of the British Indian province of Bengal into West Bengal (India) and East Bengal (Pakistan, later Bangladesh). The First Chief Minister of West Bengal was Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. The longest-serving Chief Minister was Jyoti Basu, who held office for 23 years, 137 days. The state has experienced the Presidential Rule four times in its history. Current Chief Minister of West Bengal

Mamata Banerjee is the Current Chief Minister of West Bengal. She has been in office since 20 May 2011, succeeding Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M),. She is the First woman Chief Minister of West Bengal and is serving her third consecutive term, which began on 5 May 2021. She is leading the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).

First Chief Minister of West Bengal

The First Chief Minister of West Bengal was Bidhan Chandra Roy, who served from 26 January 1950 to 1 July 1962. He served as the First President of the Cardiological Society of India from 1948 to 1950. He also served as the 5th Mayor of Calcutta from 1931 to 1933. He played a pivotal role in establishing key institutions like the Indian Medical Association and the Medical Council of India. His tenure as Chief Minister saw significant industrial and educational advancements, including the development of Durgapur and Kalyani as industrial hubs.
